The Metéora (literally meaning "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" — etymologically related to meteorology) - is a formation of immense monolithic pillars and hills like huge rounded boulders which dominate the local area of Kalambaka.
It is also associated with one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece (after Mt. Athos) built on the summits of these curiously shaped rock formations between the 12th and the 16th centuries.
It is a place of great inspiration giving one the strong impression that one has returned to the centre of where life began, to the source of one's divinity.
